The Mazinigan is Chippewas of the Thames First Nation’s community newsletter, distributed both digitally and in print. When I took over production, the publication lacked a consistent layout, cohesive typography, and organized content flow. To professionalize it and align it with the Nation’s communications standards, I completed a full redesign and template establishment—the first standardized version of the newsletter was published in July 2021.
The June 2019 edition used a simple Microsoft Word–style layout with inconsistent typefaces, limited branding, and minimal hierarchy between sections. The July 2021 redesign introduced a cohesive visual identity, professional grid system, and modular template for future issues:
Consistent Structure: Standardized section headers (“Good to Know,” “Programs,” “Workshops & Events,” “Postings,” etc.) for easy navigation.
Brand Integration: Featured the COTTFN logo and Nation name in Anishinaabemowin (Deshkan Ziibiing) throughout the publication.
Cultural Alignment: Each issue named after the Anishinaabe moon cycle (e.g., Mskomini Giizis – Raspberry Moon) with artwork reflecting that theme.
Visual Hierarchy: Used clear typographic contrast and colour blocks to separate departments, event notices, and features, improving accessibility and print readability.
Template System: Built reusable InDesign templates with pre-formatted styles, colour palettes, and grids to ensure consistent future production across departments.
This project demonstrates capacity to design and produce recurring publications from concept to completion—integrating branding, layout systems, and accessibility best practices. It also reflects strong editorial judgment and technical skill in preparing files for both digital distribution and professional printing.
The new Mazinigan became the Nation’s standardized publication format, reducing production time, improving legibility, and giving each department equal representation. It now serves as the model for all future community newsletters and information bulletins.
